We’ve just released a new report, along with researchers from Purdue’s CERIAS group, on the use of Web 2.0 and social networking technologies in business. Researchers surveyed of more than 1,000 business leaders in 17 countries, and found that while businesses see the value of Web 2.0 in supporting productivity and driving new revenue, they are clearly concerned about security.
Web 2.0 technologies are impacting all aspects of the way businesses work. As Web 2.0 technologies gain popularity, organizations are faced with a choice – they can allow them to propagate unchecked, they can block them, or they can embrace them and the benefits they provide while managing them in a secure way.
The results varied around the world, but revealed some consistencies. Many businesses still don’t have policies in place, or the right tools to allow safe use of Web 2.0 in the workplace. The consumerization of IT is a continuing trend, and businesses must get in front of it, or face the consequences.
At McAfee, we believe that Web 2.0 technologies can be used in a safe and productive way. Using technologies like our next-generation firewall, companies can set policies and gain control over how their employees are using the technology. We will continue to develop technologies that ensure the security of our customers and allow them to take advantage of everything Web 2.0 has to offer now and in the future.
Protecting against Web 2.0 does not have to be a burden– McAfee has the solutions to help businesses keep their data secure in easily and effectively. Web 2.0 is not a trend we see dying off anytime soon. It has many business benefits, so now is a great time to look at how to adopt, leverage and secure this exciting new medium.
