Recently, I was sitting on the couch watching The Tonight Show when the couch suddenly began to vibrate. I immediately turned to my eldest cyber son and said, “Is that your phone buzzing.” But it wasn’t his phone. He reached into the couch cushions and pulled out his younger brother’s cell phone. Cyber son #2 had received a text message at 11pm. So I sat there for a moment deciding what to do… do I read it?
I only deliberated for a moment. I opened the message and the message was a web link for an adult website from a classmate. Cyber son #2 is thirteen years old folks!
According to a recent McAfee and Harris Secret Online Lives of Teens poll conducted, 30% of teens access the internet through a phone and 16% of boys 16-17 downloaded adult content.
Personal experience has taught me that kids are curious about anatomy and sex. As soon as they are old enough to use a search engine on their own, chances are the thought pops into their head, “I wonder what happens if I search for…” (Usually something quite innocent at first – like “boobies” for example).
Have you seen some of the adult content out there? This isn’t your Dad’s Playboy! With the popularity of the iPhone* (just what my son’s friend was given) what in the world is a parent to do?
McAfee has a new tool for you. McAfee Family Protection is now available for the iPhone, iPad and the iPod touch! Just a simple download of the app from the iTunes store and parental set up (it’s easy, it walks you through it) and you can:
– Use website and search filtering to block age-inappropriate sites (ahem! such as, porn sites)
– View and limit usage during certain hours (hint, 35% of kids using their phones to cheat on tests at school!)
– Track the location of your kid’s Apple device if it has GPS technology
All of the “cool phones,” in my kid’s words, come with “data plans” (i.e. internet access) in my words. So if an iPhone or iPod touch is in your family’s future, do your homework about what capabilities it has – McAfee Family Protection iPhone, iPod touch and iPad may be just what you need to say “yes”.
Stay safe out there!

Thanks for catching. It’s my nickname for the product, but I’ve updated it with its accurate name so not to cause more confusion.
Tracy
Excuse me, but what does iMFP stand for?
