Just a quick blog post to update you on a privacy change on Facebook of which you may not be aware.
You may have noticed a post last week when you logged into FB which said they were partnering with Yelp, Pandora and Microsoft Docs to provide an automatic sharing feature. This is great news if you want to be able to see what music your friends are listening to on Pandora or what restaurants your friends like on Yelp.
On the other hand, this can provide a little more information about yourself than you’d like. For instance, if you don’t want your friends to know that you secretly listen to disco or luau music (teehee “J”- you know who you are!)
If you think ‘automatic sharing’ works for you then cool. However, if you aren’t interested then I wanted to let you know that there is an opt out feature in your Privacy Settings.
1. Log into Facebook.
2. Go to Account > Privacy Settings > Applications and Websites
3. Click on Instant Personalization.
4. Read the description and uncheck “allow” at the bottom if you do not want your personal activity to be shared with your Facebook friends on Pandora, Yelp or Microsoft Docs – it will ask if you are sure, click “yes”.
While I was checking out my settings, in applications and websites, I noticed that there were a few other things that I was unknowingly providing under ”What your friends can share about you.” I don’t know about you, but I don’t want the apps my friends are using to be able to gather any more information about me than my birthday! Uncheck any items you do not want to be sharing without your permission.
Have fun but take the time to look at your personal settings for any accounts you (and your kids) have online! ; )
